Description
McEwen School, District 18. McEwen's first school, built in 1884 on the Sumpter road near the turnoff to Hudspeth road. It burned down in 1909 just after school was out and just after a vote of the people in the district turned down a proposal to build a new school house. Some believe that Bill Hudspeth, a member of the school board in favor of a new building, set to it fire. The photo shows a 1958 painting from memory by Roscoe Doane, who attended school there beginning in 1895.
