Description Helen Biggs Rand (1898-1985). Helen's parents were John Biggs and Mabel Hazeltine Biggs. Mabel's parents were George Irving Hazeltine and Emeline McCallum Hazeltine. In 1926 Helen married Portland lawyer Irving Rand (1870-1951), who grew up in Baker City and was the son of John Langdon Rand, Oregon Supreme Court Justice, and Edith Packwood Rand, daughter of Wiliam H. and Johanna Packwood. After Mabel's death at age 34, Helen was raised by relatives in Baker City, where she graduated from BHS in 1916. Photo was taken by Helen's grandfather George Irving Hazeltine, a professional photographer. Mildred married Linden McCullough, a history teacher at Baker High School.
Helen wrote two excellent local history books: "Gold, Jade and Elegance" (1974), which is a short history of Baker City from 1862 to 1914; and "Whiskey Gulch" (1981), which contains grandfather George's 1862-1863 correspondence with his wife, Emeline, while he was gold mining in Canyon City and she was still in northern California. In 1863, Emeline joined George in Canyon City, where they lived the rest of their lives. Helen also authored a 100-year history of Baker City's St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.
