At an early age he removed to Wisconsin where he learned the blacksmith trade. In 1864 he crossed the plains and landed in Baker county, at the old Baldock place, without anything except a five-cent piece. H walked from there to Pocahontas where he obtained assistance and opened a small shop, thereby identifying himself with Eastern Oregon. Heafterwards conducted an extensive shop in Baker City, and in 1868 put in a small stock of hardware. Being successful in that business he gradually closed out his blacksmith business. Being of an enterprising nature he built up an immense trade. In 1871 he was married to Miss Angie Speelman. Mr. McCord was elected mayor of Baker City four times and also held the office of county treasurer eight years (four terms). He was the prime factor in having the water works of Baker City put in, thereby saving the people and the property owners many a dollar by reduced insurance ratesand protection from fire. He was always a sterling Democrat, the principles of which party he maintained throughout his entire public life. In the death of Mr. McCord, Baker county loses one of its most substantial citizens, the city one of its most courageous workers, and all join in saying: 'He was an honest man.'"
