Date of photo 1885 ca.
Description Barrett's Circus stereoview in South Baker before Oregon Lumber Co. would soon occupy the area. This dates the photo as middle to late 1880's.
What the photo shows: five tents, a buckboard, a stagecoach, a tall circus wagon, and at right edge a wagon with people, possibly curious residents of a nearby town. At the middle left edge between the tracks are a couple of men carrying a box on a pole. In the lower left corner is a coal box for resupplying the engine's tender.
Just before the Ringling Brothers formed in 1884, one of the major circus productions touring the country was the "New United Monster Railroad Show" formed by Sheldon Hopkins Barrett (1845 - 1900). Barrett travelled the country from 18831889 under this name, then joined forces with his brothers-in-law, Lewis Sells and Peter Sells, and ran under the name of the Sells Brothers Circus until 1895.
