Description Boxing match at rodeo grounds, ca. 1931. The boxer in white trunks is Cret Hardwick (born 1909) and the other boxer is African-American. Although the crowd is composed mostly of men and boys, there are about a dozen women in the audience. At the left end of the upper bleacher, there appear to be three policemen, and in the audience behind the far ropes are three soldiers. Some of this information came from Cret Hardwick's nephew John Hardwick of Baker City. The family had a big poster of the photo, but it got beat up over the years and got thrown away. In his training at home, Cret had a boxing speed bag and a big punching bag and did a lot of running. Family lore is that Cret won his match and that pay for fighting in boxing matches in those days was $75.
