Description |
First Christian Church. Built in 1913 according to an engraved stone set into the front of the right side step support. A matching stone on the left side of the steps said "Church of Christ.' The building was torn down in about the 1970s to make room for today's mental health clinic.
Following is a personal memory of Joanne Jewett Sweet, whose father, Rev. Joseph Jewett, was pastor of the First Christian Church; the family lived in the parsonage next door: "That picture of the Baker Christian Church is awesome. There was no cupola on it when we arrived in 1948. It would be interesting to know when it was taken down and why. What a unique building that was. I believe that 'we' built new steps while we were there and handrails were added. I spent many hours playing on that porch and the steps with neighborhood friends. I was not aware that it was torn down in the 1970s. Dad had moved to the Enterprise Christian Church in 1969, so I didn't go to Baker nearly as often after that date. That building played a very important part in my childhood history. |
