Description |
McEwen School, District 18. McEwen's first school, built in 1884 on the Sumpter road near the turnoff to Hudspeth road.
No image attached. This is an 8 x 10 print of photo 1992.1.259.
It burned down in 1909 just after school was out and just after a vote of the people in the district turned down a proposal to build a new school house. Some believe that Bill Hudspeth, a member of the school board in favor of a new building, set to it fire. The photo shows a 1958 painting from memory by Roscoe Doane, who attended school there beginning in 1895.
