Description |
St. Francis Academy (Virtue House), 1892-1903. Students on steps.
When James W. Virtue gave up his banking business in Baker City and moved to Portland, he sold his mansion, which sat in the middle of the block bounded by Main, First, Baker, and Church facing Church Street, to the Sisters of St. Francis. The sisters added a huge wing and turned the structure into a 12-year school for girls of all ages and for boys up to age 12. It even offered normal school courses for the training of many of this area's teachers.
