Description |
John J. Jett, wife, Dora, and son, Jesse. John H. Jett was born on 4 Oct 1851 in Trenton, Grundy County, Missouri. John married Dora S. Tracy on 27 Dec 1883 in Baker City, Baker, Oregon. Dora S. Tracy was born about 1863. They had the following children: Jesse W. Jett and Bessie F. Jett. Jett made gravemarkers and sold groceries. He was also a placer miner and was elected county treasurer in the 1890s. Isaac Hiatt, 31 Years in Baker County, wrote this about Jett's business at an earlier location: "The Baker City Marble Works, southeast corner of Court and Second Streets, was established by John H. Jett in the year 1878. Mr. Jett manufactures tombstones and monuments of the finest workmanship, importing the purest white marble from Rutland, Vermont, marble quarry." Sanborn maps show a marble works on the SE corner of Court and 2nd as early as 1888 but shows the corner vacant in 1884. So Jett's original shop must have been elsewhere. Given the shape of the window (see photo 2008.10.2) was probably taken in the shop at Court and 2nd, since the windows in the Jett Building are taller. |
