||Luther Buford Ison. Born 10-19-1841, died 12-28-1889. Wife: Josephine Cates Ison 12-18-1851 to Oct. 1940. Luther was a circuit court judge. He built the Ison House. Both buried at Mt. Hope. Children: Bertha, Edna, Virgil .
Luther's parents: Strother Ison 3-17-1813 to 8-23-1889. m. Judith Ann Gaines b. 1814, d. 9-25-1900. They came to Baker County in 1862. Both buried at Wingville.
Strother and Judith had 8 children of which Luther was the eldest. Others: Susan, Oliver, Lester, Gabrilla, Mary, Annie, and Adelia.
From Isaac Hiatt's Thirty-one Years in Baker County, 1861-1893: "Strother Ison took up a claim on Pine Creek where he continued to reside until his death which occurred in the year 1889." In 1866 Strother Ison was elected State Senator. In 1870 Luther B. Ison was elected Baker County Clerk. Re-elected in 1872 and 1874. In 1876 Luther elected Prosecuting (district) Attorney and Strother Ison was elected Baker County Commissioner. In 1882 L. B. Ison elected Oregon State Representative. Someone else had the job in 1884, so Luther was either defeated in the election or did not run for a second term. In 1886 Strother was elected State Senator (20 years after serving his first term in the legislature!). "Luther B. Ison was County School Superintendent from September, 1869, to July, 1870."
Hiatt's book does not have the results of the election of Circuit Court Judge in the years 1872 and 1874. But he does list L. L. McArthur as being judge in 1870, 1876, 1878, and 1880. My guess is that Luther beat him out in the 1872 election, was re-elected in 1874, and then ran successfully for District Attorney in 1876.
