Ezra Meeker (right) in 1900 block of Valley St. in 1910. Meeker expert Dennis Larsen says the books on the seat of the covered wagon date the photo as 1910. "The thin books in the photo would have been 'Ventures and Adventures of Ezra Meeker' printed just before he left Seattle in 1910. The thick one's would have been 'Pioneer Reminiscences of Puget Sound,' which came out in 1905." (Email 12-19-2009.)
Meeker arrived in Baker City on May 3, 1910, and stayed at the Packwood Hotel waiting for a new supply of books, sale of which helped finance his trip. He was still in Baker City on May 15, when he wrote in his diary, "Have remained here at this hotel, the Packwood all this while. The printer or binder or between them had failed to fill my orders and so found myself completely out of books and did not receive any until the 12th after which proceeded to sell with fairly good results."
On the north side of Valley St. are the IOOF Building and the Jett Building on the corner of 1st St. and Valley. Across 1st St. from the Jett Building was Nat Hall Blacksmithing Shop, present site of Eltrym Theater. |
