Description |
May Denham portrail, age ca. 20. This is a photo of a photo. May (1885-1960) was the first of six children of Hugh and Margaret "Maggie" Denham. Born in Colorado, she grew up in La Grande but mostly in Baker City, graduating from BHS in 1904, along with her best friends, Jennie Cunning and Ethel Hindman, plus well-known classmates Loy Wisdom, Herbert Chandler, and Dan Kelly, who in 1906 broke the world's record in the 100-yard dash. Right out of high school May taught at the one-room log cabin Stewart School in Bowen Valley. She next taught at South Baker School, just three blocks south of the Denham home at 1507 3rd. She later was principal of the school. In 1915 May married local physician Dr. Albert William Tiedemann. They had two children: Marjorie May and Albert, Jr. Dr. Tiedeman (also spelled Tiedeman) was a long-time member of the Baker 5J School District board of directors. When he died at age 54, South Baker School was renamed Tiedemann School in his honor. |
