Hugh Emmet Denham (1857-1941). Born 3-29-1857 in Columbia City, Iowa. Died 5-10-1941 in Baker City. Buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Denham first came to Baker City in 1880 but then lived in Colorado and in La Grande, Oregon, until settling down in Baker City for the rest of his life. He married Margaret "Maggie" Gooding (1866-1939) in Baker City in 1884. She was born 3-30-1866 in New London, Ontario, Canada. She died 1-27-1939 in the family home at 1507 3rd St. in Baker City. Denham and John Palmer had a saddle and harness shop in La Grande from 1888 until1896, when Denham moved to Baker City and set up a saddle and harness shop at 1706 Main St. in partnership with John's son, Robert R. Palmer. After 37 years in that shop, it was torn down to make room for a Standard Oil service station. The partners probably both retired at that time. In the latter years of operation, after the arrival of automobiles, the shop produced rag car tops and did upholstery. Denham and Palmer were also partners in ranching several thousand acres south and southeast of Baker City. Denham's avocation was photography, which he began in about 1903, and led to the photographs of the Baker County Library's Denham Collection. |
