Description

Johanna O'Brien Packwood (6-25-1842 to 10-14-1926). Johanna, who was born in County Limerick, Ireland, came west from Iowa with her pregnant sister, Ellen, and Ellen's husband, Dan McLaughlin. She arrived at Auburn in the summer of 1862 and started a subscription school. She met William H. Packwood in Auburn; they married that fall. Their first child, Mary (1863-1908), was one of the first white children born in Baker County. They had four more children: William, Jr. (1865-1924) born at Olds' Ferry, which the Packwoods owned; Jeff C. (1869-1921) born at Eldorado City; Edith (1871-1954) born in Baker City, who married attorney John Langdon Rand; and Margaret (1876-1917) born in Baker City. |
