Description |
McCord, Syrenus Burnett (7-22-1842 to 7-9-1894). In 1887 S. B. McCord was elected first mayor of Baker City.
Syrenus Burnett McCord (7-22-1842 to 7-9-1894). Came to Baker County in 1864. Was a blacksmith in Pocahontas, then Wingville. Joined his brother, R. D. McCord, in a blacksmith shop in Baker City in 1868. In 1871 he left the partnership with his brother to establish a hardware business on the SE corner of Main and Broadway.
When Baker City was incorporated in 1874, S. B. McCord was one of the original trustees. In 1887, after the citizens voted to have an elected mayor form of government, Baker City received a new charter from the state. Under that charter S. B. McCord was elected Baker City's first mayor. (Before that the city was governed by a board of trustees that elected its own president, same form of government we have today.) He was re-elected mayor in 1888, 1889, and 1890.
Father of O. H. P. McCord, who collected many of the historic photos in the library's collection.
