Description George Washington Hall, Baker County's 1st sheriff. This is a photo of a painting.

On back of photo: Born 25 Sept. Wayne Co. Illinois. Buried Oct. 9, 1898 at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Baker, Oregon. Date of office June 1862--appointed. The miners got together and appointed three judges and Geo. W. Hall sheriff. The three judges were Mr. Able, James R. McBride and W. H. Packwood. Their first case was a Frenchman charged with murder, Lucien Garnier having poisoned his partners. Mr. Hall married Miss Sarah Jane Lowry in 1862, the first couple married in Baker County.
