Myrtle Lee in ca. 1945. On back of photo: "from scrapbook of Boys in Service." During WWII, Myrtle spearheaded a campaign to write a monthly letter sent to Baker County men and women serving in the armed forces all over the world. Printed on both sides of legal-size paper, the letters told what was happening at home and whatever news there was about those serving in the armed forces. In this image Myrtle is shown holding some of the correspondence received from men and women in the service in WWII.
J. Roscoe Lee and Myrtle Emily Gutterson were married June 4, 1914, in Hamline (now part of St. Paul) Minnesota. Myrtle's sister, Gyda Gutterson, was bridesmaid at the wedding.
Roscoe was born Mar. 22, 1880 in OR, died Nov. 14, 1965, in Forest Grove, OR, buried at Lincoln Memorial Park. Myrtle was born Jan. 2, 1892, in Lake Crystal, Blue Earth Co., MN, died Apr 4, 1981, in Honolulu, HI. They had four children:
1. Jason Dwight Lee b: 02 Jun 1915 in Baker Co., OR d: 19 Feb 1980 in Marion Co., OR
2. Gilbert Prentiss Lee b: 10 Oct 1917 in Richland, Baker Co., OR, d: 19 June 2010 in Portland, OR, where he had lived since 1952; he married Patricia Alison Brownell (b: 1923) 09 Jul 1949.
3.Granville Lee b: 22 Feb 1920 in Baker Co., OR d: 20 Aug 1984 in Santa Barbara Co., CA
4. Joseph Roscoe Jr. Lee b: 1922 in Baker Co., OR d: Bef. 1981.
Roscoe and wife Myrtle lived in Baker City for many years. He sold insurance, she was Baker County school superintendent from 1943 to 1956.
