Description	Mabel Merwin Nelson. On back of photo: "Mable Merwin 1901 B.H.S." She married Robert L. Nelson. Helen Mabel Merwin Nelson was born 10-11-1881 near Keating, Oregon, to Arthur Todd Merwin and Celestia Prudence Wait Merwin. The family moved to Baker City in 1901 and lived at 2305 3rd St. After graduating from high school, Mabel taught school for many years. She married deputy sheriff Robert L. Nelson 8-5-1905. They had one child, Robert. Todd died 10-30-1926. Mabel moved in with her parents and took care of them until she died. In 1934 she was appointed city clerk and municipal judge, positions she held until 1946, when she retired at age 65. But then she worked as a bookkeeper for Hotel Baker. Mabel died 1-17-1976 at age 94. Shortly before she died, she donated her Aunt Delila Wait's Oregon Trail diary to the Baker County Library.
