Description I. B. Bowen, Jr. "In the month of May in the year 1870, just twenty-eight years ago, the Weekly Democrat was founded by the late Judge L. L. McArthur and M. H. Abbott. How fitting then it is that in this month of May, 1898, over a quarter of a century later, the present publishers should offer to the people a "Souvenir Edition," one showing how well this part of the great northwest has kept pace with the onward march of progress. In May 1887 the present proprietors, Messrs. I. B. Bowen, [Jr.,] and George B. Small, succeeded to the ownership of the Democrat, and under their direction its publication has been up to a high standard of excellence, and no paper in the state commands more respect in the journalistic field."
