Description SVRy. Heisler engine # 4.

Brooks Hawley notes: Factory picture of Heisler geared locomotive of the Heisler Locomotive Works, Erie, Pa. Used on the steeper logging branches. Slow and steady.

Logging engines are geared locomotives and are of three main types:

Heisler: had the crank shaft lengthways directly under the boiler with cylinders on each side slanting toward the crank shaft.

Shay: had the boiler offset to the left with both cylinders vertical on the right side of the boiler and the crank shaft offset, lengthways to the right of center.

Climax: had the crank shaft crossways under the boiler and the cylinders were at an angle downward, lengthways of the boiler.

Then they all had to have gearing to connect the crank shaft to all the drive wheels, like a Jeep four wheel drive only it would be eight wheels.
