Brooks Hawley notes: Lyle Carpenter says No. 14 was originally a wide gage engine and when the drive wheels were set in for narrow gage, counter balances filled the space between the wheels and the drive rods. It was not on the road a lot but was used more as a switch engine. Walter Mendenhall says this engine never was wide guage.
