Description |
Sumpter Valley Railway train at lumber mill in Bates, Oregon, in 1937. The first engine is loaded on a flatcar headed for the scrap heap. Smith says he got this image from Gladys Davis (deceased), who used to work in the hotel at Bates. The train in stopped in front of the hotel (white building at left). The near building was a dance hall. In the background at the right is the lumber mill. |
