Donor of photo, Anne Marie Shirley Melmon, told about the photo in this email dated 5-16-2012: "This is what I remember of being a Girl Scout: A troop usually consists of girls from one class, in a particular school. This is probably because everyone knows each other, and most meetings are held at the school, or some place close by, that is easy for everyone to get to....like a location central to the school, i.e., in the "hood." Our little troop, which my Mom agreed to lead, originated at Tiedeman in the 5th grade. I remember Marsha Edge's Mom coming to one meeting (usually held once a week) to give us girls 'beauty' tips. (Mrs. Edge had been a beautician--beauty operator in our day.) The troop continued into 6th grade--Junior High--where a few girls from the other grade schools joined in, e.g., Gwen Arteburn and Ruth Hazel Lewis. After 6th grade, we disbanded. I guess we thought as 7th graders we were too old for scouts. Or maybe Mom got tired of being leader, and no none else stepped up. In the photo we are 6th graders. All of us Tiedeman girls in the photo had been Brownies. Don't remember who our Brownie leader was." |
