Brooks Hawley note: Two of the finest pictures to represent "the forest primeval" in the Sumpter country. These pictures are from around Whitney about 1900, but can represent the original stand in Sumpter Valley as well. No doubt these are J. W. Cowden phototgraphy. These pictures define that old theory for Sumpter Valley that there was so little underbrush that one could drive a team and buggy through the forest on the valley level as through a park.
