Description |
Prospect hole near Rainbow Mine in Mormon Basin. Gary Fugate, a Malheur County historian, says he believes the location of this photo is a site he's seen in Quartz Gulch near Malheur City. He says the photo does not match the area of the Rainbow Mine.
Other info about Burrus: He seemed to arrive in Baker City in 1895 or so when he was only 18 (originally from Howard County, Missouri) and was soon taking photos over in Malheur City. So he must have worked for a short time in a Baker Studio to learn the trade before going to Malheur County, where he had a photographic studio circa 1896-1899. In 1900 he returned to Missouri and only a year later returned west, this time to Walla Walla, where he opened a jewelry store and the Pacific Loan Company. His wife was Lulu Van Patten of Baker City. He divorced Lulu, who married twice more. She is buried in Mt .Hope Cemetery as Lulu Couzens. Burrus is buried in Walla Walla. |
