Description |
Mother Lode Mine. This photo was scanned from a November 15, 1925, edition of The Sunday Oregonian. Headline reads: "Baker County Copper Development Promises a New Empire." Subheading reads: "Millions of Dollars' Worth of Paying Ore Now Blocked Out, With Indications of Still Greater Deposits at Lower Levels--Numerous Strong Companies Operating--Gold, Silver and Lead Are Also Found." Photo shows John Arthur of Baker City, mine manager. In the early 1900's there was much speculation that the area from Keating to Homestead contained a huge band of copper ore. But no significant amounts of copper were ever produced except at the Iron Dyke Mine at Homestead.
