Description Althouse, Oregon. A mining camp on Althouse Creek in SW Oregon near Jacksonville.

Photo of a painting of Althouse by Sigmund Heilner, who was in business there with his older brother Seligmann Heilner (aka Cohn) for a number of years beginning in the late 1850's.

The Heilner brothers came to Baker County in 1872 and built a stone general merchandise store at Sparta. The store is still standing today. They moved their business to Baker City in 1874 building on the NW corner of Main and Court streets. Seligmann was shot to death in front of the store in 1886. Sigmund (Sam) lived out his days in Baker City. He died in 1917.
