Welcome Arch, erected at 10th & D June 20, 1920. The view is south into town. On the left end it reads: Baker the Metropolis of Eastern Oregon. Altitude 3440 Population 9000. On the right end: Baker is unexcelled for its fine water system and good schools.
Chet Smith, who was born on 10th Street, sent me this email message right after he celebrated his 100th birthday May 10, 2011: "The original wording at the bottom of the curve, as you approach from the North, said, 'BAKER WELCOMES YOU. ENTER WITHOUT KNOCKING AND DEPART LIKEWISE.' If you look carefully at the photo you will see a different shade of paint was used to change the message." grd |
