Description Packwood/Rand House at 2580 1st. Johanna O'Brien Packwood, widow of William H. Packwood, is seated. The other adults are Edith Packwood Rand and John Rand on each end. In the middle are their sons, Landon (b. 1901) and Irving (b. 1896). The young girl is Edith Wheeler (b. 1904), daughter of Margaret Packwood Wheeler, who died in 1917. Margaret's parents were William and Johanna Packwood.
Present owner, Candice Hofmann, wrote: Record of the property at Amerititle in Baker City shows the first owner as Johanna Packwood, wife of William Henderson Packwood, Sr. The house was built in 1903 or 1904. This photo was taken somewhere between 1904 and 1908.
Extensive work was done on the house around 1920 at which time the front porch was enclosed and a large addition was built at the rear of the house. At some point, a fireplace and chimney were added. The "legend" is that the fireplace's ornate wooden mantel was exhibited at the 1915 San Francisco World Exposition and was later installed in the house. Ownership of the house was passed down to family members until it was sold to John and Jan Kirby in 1978. In 1981, Kirbys sold it to Charles and Candice Hofmann, who are the present (2001) owners and occupants.
