Main St. looking north from Court St. Fountain in middle of intersection. Geiser Grand Hotel at middle right; Neuberger-Heilner Bldg. at left edge. Baker City Opera House at far end right.
Morning Democrat of 7-27-1906 had this story about the fountain's origin and a team o runaway horses:
A door slammed, the horses bolted, the tongue of wagon caught the fountain and knocked it over. Another man jumped in the runaway wagon and got the horses stopped. People said maybe the middle of the street was not a good place for the fountain. The fountain was placed there by the Citizens League two years ago. |
